Lifting the Burden in Motivational Interviewing
Hi. Its me, Jody Kamon, one of the founders at C4BHI. Lets face it, we all struggle with change.
When I was in my late twenties, I was told my cholesterol was not great and I needed to change my diet. I relied on fast food and fried food for convenience and comfort. The idea of shifting away from that, especially when I was being told to do it made me want to rebel!
Another time, I knew I wanted to stop smoking cigarettes AND at the same time, I enjoyed the ritual of it, the social connection it brought me, and the effect of nicotine on my body. If you pause long enough, you will likely find an area of your life where you are thinking about or trying to change.
Motivational Interviewing or MI is often described as a particular way of approaching conversations about change. It is one of the most well-researched, evidenced-based approaches available and is used across diverse contexts and professions to address a wide range of issues such as substance use, mental health, physical health, treatment adherence, fitness, and conflict. In the link below, you can learn more about the heart of MI from one of it's founders, Dr. William Miller.
You can also check out video demonstrations of various MI elements here.
If, after that, you are curious how we may be able to support your organization in adopting MI, please reach out to us. Myself and my co-founder, Win Turner, train nationally on Motivational Interviewing and have been engaged in the practice of MI since 2000.
